How does bursting pipes work

The weather in the Beaverton area is still looking pretty snowy. We've gone over past blogs before how snowfall and rain will contribute to potential mold issues... But what other implications might happen that people don't think of when it's freezing outside?
Bursting pipes.
The general rule of thumb is that water freezes when temperatures reach 32 degrees Fahrenheit. However, when pipes are indoors.. It can be hard to dictate how cold the temperatures need to be in order for trouble.
With a reasonable amount of insulation, even pipes in an unheated area could take up to 6-hours to freeze. This means that the air temperature has to remain at 20° for about 6-hours before there's a risk of your pipes freezing. Nonetheless, it's important to stay in tune with the surrounding temperatures, and take extra care when it becomes freezing conditions.
