What dangers can a leaky roof cause?

When you own a home, you've most likely had a home inspection done prior. One of the most critically important things about the house is an integrity of the infrastructure, including the roof. So what potential hazards can happen if a leaking roof goes untreated? 

Attic damage

Not only will the paint and interior be affected, but so will the belongings that's stowed inside your attic. There's a risk of bubbles forming, and plaster expansion. 

Interior mildew and mold

Common and hard for home owners to resolve independently. It only takes 24-48 hours for microbial growth to develop under optimal conditions. Not all mold will pose a health risk - but it's still crucial to get this fixed as soon as possible. 

Fire hazards

Hard to believe, isn't it? 
However, it's not considered that the water intrusion can pose a threat from shortened wires. If there's a leak in the attic, be sure to turn off the electricity in that area until a professional can inspect.

Higher utility bills

Your cellulose or fiberglass insulation becomes saturated and it takes a long time for it to dry out. If a roof leak repair is put off for a long time, chronic water intrusion will deplete the insulation significantly and your home will lose hot and cool air, resulting in higher utility bills.
