It’s the time of year where family gatherings are the norm. Your calendar is likely full of get-togethers along with many other things. As you think of all these holidays, naturally, things like home maintenance get “lost in the cracks.”
There’s one thing you can’t forget, though, which is the importance of staying safe during potentially hazardous weather.
As winter makes its way to our area, let’s review some important safety tips that winter brings with it.
Protect Your Family
Communication is key! It’s one of the best ways you can protect your family. Ensure that your family has an emergency action plan to help reduce fear in the case of bad weather, and can stay in contact in the face of danger.
Another way to prepare for winter weather is to winterize your vehicle. That means making sure everything is in good working order.
It would be resourceful to keep an emergency supply kit in your vehicle in case you become stranded in your car during the cold. Things you could include are spare clothes, non-perishable foods, and a first-aid kit.
Protect Your Home
As many people know, frozen pipes are one of the most substantial expenses (and headaches) for homeowners. Make sure you know how to prevent frozen pipes before a disastrous accident occurs.
Now is a perfect time to inspect your home heating source to ensure it is well-maintained and properly working. If your home has a fireplace, make sure it’s cleaned and well ventilated before use.
As you prepare your home for colder weather, go ahead and stock up on extra firewood as it could become difficult to get once weather conditions change.
Protect Your Pets
Just like you, your pets need to be warm. Make sure they have protection from the weather, either by bringing them inside your home or having a place set up for them in your garage.
It’s also important to confirm that your livestock has plenty of thawed water and food.
Watch for Melts and Flooding
As we all know, your home can flood from things other than torrential rain. For example, snow or ice melt, which turns into water, can cause dangerous floods.
While we don’t get much snow here in Beaverton, it’s still important to keep an eye on the weather. Make sure to keep up with emergency weather alerts, and always use caution.
